1. Introduction
Honda began its journey to becoming the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer in 1946, with the ‘Batabata’; a humble yet refined motor to add to bicycles, designed to mobilise as many people as simply, and quickly, as possible. There have been other forays into using innovative methods to power bicycles since. In 1995, for example, the electric-assist Raccoon was unveiled, followed by the 1996 Raccoon CX with MTB styling, the folding 1998 Raccoon Compo and 2001 Step Compo, designed to be carried in the Step WGN. To gather technical knowledge and accelerate development through competition, Honda launched the RN01 project in the early 2000s. Developed as a dedicated downhill racing machine, the RN01 competed in domestic and international downhill events, including the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. The project achieved multiple UCI Mountain Bike Downhill World Cup race victories and reached its peak in 2005, when Team G Cross Honda secured the UCI Downhill World Cup Overall Title, demonstrating Honda’s engineering capabilities at the highest level of the sport.
A lot has changed since Honda’s first foray into E-bikes and today Europe is the largest market globally in terms of volume and size for sales, and it’s steadily growing. For 27YM Honda will be joining this market, with the brand-new RN0. A collaboration between Honda, elite high-end builder ROTWILD and legendary Japanese component manufacturer Shimano, the stunning RN0 is distinct with its motorcycle-inspired carbon monocoque frame design standing out from the crowd. It’s also armed with top-level torque/ weight ratio for its class – with geometry engineered for both smooth suspension reaction and responsive pedalling.
Three frame sizes (S, M, L) cover almost all rider dimensions. And benefiting from the performance advantages of its unique motorcycle-inspired carbon monocoque frame, the RN0 is both confidence-inspiring over tough ground and easy to ride.
“New Terrain, Same Dream.”
This philosophy sits at the core of the all-new RN0. “New Terrain” refers not only to the mountains and trails where mountain bikes are ridden, but also to Honda’s venture into a new mobility category. “Same Dream” expresses the belief that, while the product and the terrain may be new, Honda’s enduring ambition remains unchanged: To expand human potential and deliver the joy of control, exploration and challenge.
The RN0’s development was guided by Large Project Leader Yusuke Muto, a lifelong cycling enthusiast whose involvement in mountain biking stretches back to 1995. With a background that includes competitive cross-country, downhill and BMX racing, alongside decades of continued riding experience, Muto san brought an authentic rider’s perspective to the project. This combination of engineering expertise and genuine passion for mountain biking influenced every stage of the RN0’s development, helping create an e-MTB that delivers intuitive performance, confidence-inspiring handling and a rewarding riding experience on the trail.
Drawing on long-standing engineering expertise and spirit of innovation, Honda and Muto san aim to bring new value and distinctive riding experiences to the world of mountain biking.
Designed as a premium e-MTB, the RN0 weighs just over 23kg and is equipped with high-end components from Shimano, FOX and ROTWILD. 3. Key Features
3.1 Frame and styling
- Carbon fibre monocoque frame and Gullwing swingarm developed to balance pedalling efficiency with terrain-smoothing suspension performance
- Distinctive Honda design language
- Three frame sizes cover almost all rider sizes
The Honda RN0 has been developed through a close collaboration between Honda and ROTWILD, combining specialist e-MTB expertise with Honda’s design philosophy, shaped through decades of creating innovative two-wheeled products. While rooted in high-performance mountain bike design, the RN0 focuses on delivering the efficiency, control and rider confidence, made possible by its unique design, across a wide range of terrain.
Prominent Honda branding helps establish a clear visual connection with Honda’s growing European electric two-wheel portfolio, comprising the EM1 e: moped, CUV e: scooter and Honda WN7 full-sized electric motorcycle. The RN0’s distinctive motorcycle-inspired monocoque carbon fibre frame and signature Gullwing swingarm create a strong and instantly recognisable identity while serving a clear engineering purpose.
Developed from a ROTWILD foundation and benchmarked against leading premium e-MTBs, the frame and suspension layout were refined to deliver the balanced riding characteristics demanded by all-mountain riders. The design team focused on achieving efficient power transfer and precise handling, while maintaining the suspension compliance required to absorb rough terrain and maximise rider comfort and control.
The resulting structure creates a direct load path between the head tube and rear axle, enhancing terrain feedback and helping riders intuitively sense changes in surface conditions, while delivering the strength, stability and responsiveness required for demanding off-road riding. The Gullwing swingarm and suspension arrangement work in harmony to balance pedalling efficiency with bump absorption – two characteristics that often compete in mountain bike chassis design.
Compared with a conventional frame, the motorcycle-inspired carbon monocoque frame delivers enhanced compliance and exceptional terrain feedback through its distinctive structure. Reduced lateral stiffness allows greater frame compliance, improving cornering performance and helping the bike maintain composure across varying terrain conditions. At the same time, increased vertical stiffness contributes to improved strength, stability and braking performance. The result is a chassis that delivers confident handling across a wide variety of trail conditions, from flowing single-track to technical descents.
The RN0’s geometry has been optimised specifically for all-mountain riding and tailored across three frame sizes – Small, Medium and Large – to provide a consistent riding experience for a broad range of riders.
Each frame size has been individually engineered with size-specific dimensions, ensuring that the RN0 delivers its intended all-mountain handling characteristics regardless of rider size.

At the heart of the RN0 is Shimano’s newly developed EP810 drive unit, created specifically to meet the performance demands of next-generation electric mountain bikes. Compared to the current EP801, the EP810 is more compact, lighter and significantly more powerful. Housed behind a magnesium alloy cover with integrated cooling fins, and weighing just 2.3kg, it produces 100Nm of torque and up to 750W of peak power, providing strong and consistent assistance across a broader range of riding conditions.
Designed to deliver natural and predictable support, the EP810 maintains assistance across a wider pedalling cadence range than its predecessor, continuing to provide output power up to 160rpm rather than 120rpm. The result is more consistent performance whether riders are spinning quickly on technical climbs or pushing hard through fast-flowing trail sections.
Further enhancing control is Shimano’s extended Assist Carry Over function. Even after the rider stops pedalling, the system continues to provide a measured level of support, helping maintain momentum and traction over obstacles such as rocks, roots and ledges. This allows riders to negotiate technical terrain more smoothly and with greater confidence.
Three riding modes – ECO, TRAIL+ and BOOST – allow riders to tailor assistance levels to conditions and personal preference. Within TRAIL+ mode, Shimano’s AUTO ASSIST technology continuously analyses rider input and terrain gradient to adjust power delivery in real time. As slopes become steeper, support increases progressively and predictably, helping reduce wheelspin at the rear and unwanted front-wheel lift on challenging climbs.
Working alongside AUTO ASSIST is Shimano’s latest-generation AUTO SHIFT system. Using an updated control algorithm and motion sensor, the system automatically selects gears to maintain an efficient pedalling cadence between 70 and 160rpm while ensuring maximum power remains available when required.
Together, AUTO ASSIST and AUTO SHIFT reduce rider workload and allow greater focus on the trail ahead. Whether accelerating into a steep climb, navigating technical switchbacks or transitioning onto flatter terrain, the system works seamlessly to maintain momentum, traction and control. Shifts are timed to preserve riding rhythm, while assistance remains smooth and predictable during both acceleration and during ‘assist carry over’. FREE SHIFT enables the rider to switch gears during coasting.
The RN0 also introduces several advanced technologies derived from Shimano’s racing and performance development programmes. Riders are able to shift gear while coasting, allowing more effective preparation for upcoming terrain changes. A further feature, Lift and Shift, selects a lower gear when restarting on steep gradients, helping riders regain momentum quickly and efficiently. Riders simply lift the rear wheel and hold the mode switch to trigger the functionality.
Integrated neatly into the top tube is Shimano’s SC-EN700 display. The compact 2.2-inch full-colour screen presents essential ride information clearly and intuitively, while an integrated USB-C port allows device charging on the move and provides connectivity for diagnostic functions. System controls are managed via Shimano’s wireless SW-UT600-LR multi-purpose switch, whilst additional connectivity is provided through Shimano’s CONNECT mobile app. Once downloaded and paired, it can function as a cycle computer and enables users to lock and unlock the bike’s electronic systems via smartphone. The app can also be used to tune motor feel and characteristics to suit riders and terrain.
Power is supplied by Shimano’s latest generation battery platform. The standard configuration uses a lightweight 720Wh 43.2V removable battery. Completing the drivetrain package is Shimano’s Deore XT Di2 electronic groupset. A Shimano FC-M8200-E crankset (160 (S) / 165 (M/L)) works in conjunction with a 34-tooth SM-CRE80 chainring and an e*thirteen chain guide, while the RD-M8290 Deore XT Di2 rear derailleur and CS-M6200-12 10-51T cassette provide a wide range of gearing suitable for everything from steep technical climbs to high-speed descents.
