A 1990 Harley-Davidson Sportster owned by the late, great Kevin Keegan has been hammered away for £35,075 and was among the standout lots sold by H&H Classics on Wednesday 22nd July.
Offered at no reserve, there had been growing interest in Kevin Keegan’s eye-catching motorbike, a unique tribute to his time at Newcastle United F.C., ever since H&H Classics was asked by the football superstar to sell it five months ago.
Fierce bidding clearly showed the admiration and respect for the football legend who sadly passed away earlier in the week at the age of 75 from cancer.
Meanwhile, the auction of classic motorcycles, vintage scooters, and a selection of automobilia lots which took place at the National Motorcycle Museum, saw total sales of more than more than £1.6 million, with 290 of the lots on offer going to new homes, resulting in a 90% sell-through rate.
Mike Davis, senior motorcycle specialist at H&H Classics, said: “It was a privilege for H&H Classics to auction Kevin Keegan’s Harley-Davidson, and you could feel the passion from the bidders who were keen to show their appreciation for one of this country’s greatest ever footballers. Indeed, the winning bidder, an American-domiciled British businessman, flew a representative in from the States to attend the sale in person rather than risk any technological hiccups with a phone or internet bid.”
Other notable results included the ‘one-off’ 2009 Millyard Viper V10, a world record-breaking motorcycle, and among the most individually famous bikes on the planet, which fetched £149,500, almost £50,000 above its lower estimate.
The fully road legal machine, the creation of Allen Millyard, a custom bike builder and genius engineer, broke the Fastest Tandem World Record in May 2023, officially timed at 183.5mph, beating the previous record by almost 5mph.
Additionally, a 1955 Vincent Black Prince/Watsonian Combination, one of only around 130 Black Princes made in 1955 and also fitted with a Watsonian Mk1 Monaco sports sidecar, fetched £31,050, more than £16,000 above its lower estimate.
Other highlights included a 1937 Brough Superior SS80, entered from the Chris Harris Collection, which was hammered away for £54,050, more than £16,000 above its lower estimate, and a 1989 Honda VFR750R RC30, one of the greatest ‘80s superbikes and a rare Spanish market example, found a new home for £35,650, which was £15,650 above its lower estimate.
One of the star vintage scooters was a 1972 Vespa Rally 200 ‘The Ace Face’ sting evocation, indistinguishable from the film original and signed by virtually all of the cast of Quadrophenia, which was hammered away for £16,100, more than £2,000 above its lower estimate.
