WorldSSP300: Loris Veneman’s return to the class couldnt’ have gone better.
The MTM Kawasaki rider started from pole and led from the start of the race. Ultimately the battle came down to the final lap with Veneman battling with his teammate, Carter Thompson, and Matteo Vannucci (PATA AG Motorsport Italia WorldSSP300).
The final corners of the 11 lap race settled the outcome. Entering Turn 15 Thompson tried to attack from third position but ran into the downhill right hander carrying too much speed and he ran wide. The incident cost Vannucci some momentum and allowed Veneman to force an aggressive move into Turn 16 and the final chicane. It was the Dutch rider’s fourth win in the WorldSSP300 class.
The podium finishers separated themselves with their pursuers. The second group was led by the Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing duo of Phillip Tonn and Jeffrey Buis with David Salvador (Team ProDina XC) recovering from a Long Lap Penalty to finish in sixth position.
Championship leader Benat Fernandez (Team#109 Retro Traffic Kove) started from the 11th row of the grid after a penalty and could only finish 11th to claim five points. At the end of the race the Spaniard was over ten seconds adrift.
Vannucci’s fastest lap will be rewarded with pole position for Sunday’s Race 2.
Championship Highlights
- Fernandez’ championship lead is extended to six points over Julio Garcia with the Prodina Kawasaki Racing Sport rider sitting out this weekend’s action due to injury
- Kawasaki now leads the Manufacturer Standings by 45 points from KOVE
P1 – Loris Veneman (MTM Kawasaki)
“The race went really well from start to finish. The pace wasn’t high, because of the wind, so I could manage the tyres and be ready for a last-lap attack. When I saw Matteo just ahead, I thought, ‘I’ll go for it and see what happens,’ and it worked perfectly. I couldn’t be happier. Sunday might be harder to keep such a small group, but in WorldSSP300 you never know. I’ll try my best to make it happen again.”
